Tax expertise for accounting professionals and their clients.
Vortex Advisory Group works with accounting professionals who provide bookkeeping, accounting, and related financial services but don't offer tax services themselves.
We provide experienced business and individual tax preparation, planning, and practical guidance that complement the services you already provide.
Whether you need assistance with a tax question, help with a client's returns, or an experienced tax professional to collaborate with, our goal is to support your practice while respecting the client relationships you've built.
-
Vortex provides federal and state tax preparation for small businesses and their owners, including S corporations, partnerships, C corporations, and individual income tax returns.
We also provide tax planning and practical guidance to help clients understand their tax obligations, evaluate business decisions, and identify planning opportunities.
-
No. Vortex focuses on tax preparation and planning rather than bookkeeping or ongoing accounting services.
We recognize the important role accounting professionals play in supporting their clients throughout the year. Our services are designed to complement that work, not compete with it.
-
We're flexible.
Some accounting professionals prefer to introduce their clients to Vortex and have us handle tax matters directly. Others prefer to remain closely involved, coordinating communication and helping manage the tax preparation process.
We're comfortable with either approach. Our goal is to establish a working relationship that supports the client while respecting your existing relationship.
Vortex maintains the necessary direct client engagement and authorizations, while allowing communication and coordination to flow through you as much as practical.
-
That depends on the working arrangement we establish.
We can communicate directly with clients on tax matters or coordinate primarily through you when appropriate.
Certain matters, including engagement agreements, tax return approvals, and required authorizations, must be handled directly with the client.
-
Absolutely.
We welcome questions from accounting professionals and are happy to serve as a professional tax resource.
Whether you're considering the tax treatment of a transaction, discussing a business decision, or simply looking for another professional perspective, we're happy to help when we can.
There's no requirement to have a client engagement with Vortex before reaching out.
-
Yes. Tax planning is an important part of our practice.
We can help evaluate the tax implications of business decisions, discuss entity structures, identify potential tax-saving opportunities, and address issues before they become problems at tax time.
We also welcome collaboration with accounting professionals who have valuable insight into their clients' financial activities throughout the year.
-
Our primary focus is small businesses and their owners, particularly S corporations, partnerships, and C corporations.
We also prepare individual income tax returns and consider other tax engagements based on their complexity and the client's needs.
We're intentionally building a small practice and place a high value on developing productive, long-term professional relationships.
-
Fees depend on the complexity of the tax returns, the services required, and the scope of the engagement.
We discuss fees and expectations before beginning work so clients understand the services being provided.
-
Yes. Vortex operates virtually and can work with clients in other states, depending on their tax requirements and the nature of the engagement.
-
Vortex is led by Dr. Steven Johnson, CPA, CITP, who brings nearly three decades of experience in public accounting, business taxation, and financial leadership.
Steve previously owned and operated a CPA firm and held senior leadership positions in tax and accounting services. He is currently a Professor of Accounting at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he primarily teaches business taxation and advanced accounting courses.
Vortex is intentionally structured as a small practice, allowing accounting professionals and clients to work directly with Steve.
-
Not at all.
We're happy to discuss how we work, answer questions, and explore whether Vortex might be a useful tax resource for your accounting practice.
